How to Stay Top of Mind Between Projects

A homeowner needs an electrician after a breaker trips and someone else's AC quits in the middle of July. Another family decides it's finally time to remodel the kitchen. When those moments happen, who comes to mind first?

For most home service businesses, the biggest challenge isn't doing great work. It's making sure people remember your name weeks or even months after the project is finished. Staying visible between jobs can lead to more referrals, repeat business, and an easier shoulder season.

The best part? It doesn't require a huge advertising budget. What truly works? Consistency; it really goes a long way. Here's how to say 'My Marketing Works':

  • Check in after the job is complete
  • Share how you're involved in your community
  • Don't be a social media ghost
  • Follow up with email - one of the BEST channels to stay top of mind for a nominal investment (what we certainly call a win!)

Show the Work You're Already Doing

You don't need to come up with content when every job site already gives you something worth sharing. Snap photos before you unload the truck or capture the progress halfway through a bathroom remodel or cabinetry project. Take a quick video of fresh sod being rolled out or a technician explaining why an AC capacitor failed. Why? Because people enjoy seeing work come together!

But how do you keep it interesting? Well, one week you might post a finished deck. The next, you could share custom trim details from a home renovation. Another day could feature a drain inspection camera or freshly painted shutters.

Remember, variety keeps your pages interesting while giving potential customers a glimpse of what it's like to hire you!

Check In After the Job Is Done

Most companies disappear once the invoice is paid. That leaves a perfect opportunity for you to stand out. A simple follow-up text or email a few weeks later shows customers you still care.

Ask how everything is working or see if they have questions. If they're happy with the results, include a direct link to leave a Google review. That one message can generate reviews, referrals, and future projects without feeling pushy.

Stay Involved in Your Community

Marketing doesn't always happen online - it's offline too.

Sponsor a youth sports team or volunteer at a community cleanup. Participate in local festivals, donate a service to a fundraiser, or support a neighborhood event. People enjoy hiring businesses they recognize from around town.

Just remember to take photos/videos while you're at events and share them. It gives customers another reason to remember your company beyond the work you perform. It turns you into a caring, credible team, and people like doing business with people they like.

Don't Let Social Media Go Quiet

One of the fastest ways to disappear is to let your Facebook or Instagram page sit untouched for months. If your last post was from Christmas and it’s now July, referrals and prospective customers will wonder if you're still open.

But don’t worry. You don't have to post every day. We like to aim for a steady mix of project photos, customer testimonials, seasonal reminders, employee spotlights, maintenance tips, and behind-the-scenes moments. We post 2-3 times a week and clients can fill in the gaps around if they'd like. Keep that cadence and you'll stay top of mind as people scroll.

Keep Your Google Business Profile Active

Many contractors forget about one of the first places customers look. Adding new photos, responding to reviews, posting updates, and answering common questions all help keep your Google Business Profile fresh. It also gives prospective customers confidence that your business is active and engaged.

Build an Email List You Actually Use

Email isn't outdated. It's one of the easiest ways to stay connected with past customers. Send a monthly newsletter with home maintenance reminders, seasonal promotions, recent projects, or helpful homeowner tips.

A roofing company might remind customers to inspect shingles after storm season. A landscaping company could share watering recommendations during the summer. A garage door company might explain the signs that springs are wearing out.

P.S. These emails don't need to be long. They simply remind customers that you're still there whenever they need help.

Stay in Touch and Top of Mind

Your next job might come from a past customer.  It's true that it's cheaper on your marketing budget to maintain relationships with the clients you have now. That's why, we always tell clients to use this job to get the next one.

If marketing keeps getting pushed to the bottom of your to-do list (right next to “organize the supply closet”), My Marketing Works can help. From social media management and content creation to email marketing and local SEO, we help keep your business top of mind, so when customers need help again, your name is the one they remember.
